Clinical Mental Health Counselor & Certified Group Psychotherapist

Paul Callister, PhD, CMHC, CGP

Paul is a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Certified Group Psychotherapist with a passion for helping people create meaningful change in their lives through individual, couples, and group therapy. He earned his PhD in Counselor Education from Oregon State University in 2022 and has been practicing therapy since completing his master's degree at the University of Utah in 2010.

Specialized Training

Paul has specialized training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples, EMDR therapy (certified by EMDRIA in 2015), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Motivational Interviewing (MI), complicated grief, and object relations psychotherapy. He uses person-centered and social constructivist approaches in his work.

Paul completed the EFT externship and core skills training in December 2017 and is currently working toward EFT certification. EFT is one of the most researched and effective approaches to couples therapy, helping partners reconnect emotionally and build stronger, more secure relationships.

In addition to his work with couples, Paul has extensive training in group therapy through the Center for Group Studies in New York, where he studies modern group analysis following the approaches of Louis Ormont and Hyman Spotnitz. He has completed all nine blocks of their weekend training program and is currently in their reading program.

Paul's Approach

Paul's approach to therapy is collaborative, compassionate, and focused on creating lasting change. Whether working with individuals, couples, or groups, he helps clients understand their patterns, develop new ways of relating, and build the life they want. He currently runs three weekly process groups and plans to expand his group therapy offerings in the future.

Teaching & Community Involvement

Paul is also an adjunct professor at Utah Valley University, where he teaches Group Counseling to graduate students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. He is passionate about training the next generation of therapists and advancing the field of group psychotherapy.

Paul served as President of the Utah Mental Health Counselors Association (UMHCA) from 2017 to 2018, after serving on their board from 2014 to 2019. He is a member of the American Group Psychotherapy Association and the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy.
